Mt. Tangkuban Perahu

Mt. Tangkuban Perahu is Bandung’s most well-known nature attraction. Just north of the city, this active volcano offers many places to see and explore. Whether you look into the huge crater or hike down into it, stroll through the forests on its slopes, or simply enjoy the splendid panoramic view, Mt. Tangkuban Perahu is a must destination for everyone in the Bandung area.

Mt. Tangkuban Perahu is 25 km north of Bandung, or about forty-five minutes by car. With travel time included, you can easily spend a day exploring the area. The crater rim is equally accessible by ca or public transport, so accessible that great numbers of people rush up there every Sunday and public holiday; so if you want to avoid the crowds go on a weekday, Saturday, or early Sunday morning.

The entry gate, about 5 km below the summit, opens at 6:15 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m.; being there very early pays off. Since clouds often roll in towards midday, it’s advisable to visit the top crater first and do the lower on later. Just follow the road until you reach the crater rim at an elevation of, 830 m. Only a wooden fence and good brakes keep your vehicle from going straight over the rim and most popular tourist spot-the immediacy of the crater is overwhelming, despite all the souvenir sellers.
